Wolves Top Minnewaska Lakers 20-14

Sat, August 30, 2008 - Posted by Coach Johnson

Alex Hass threw for 202 yards and Milaca rushed for 233 yards on the ground to put together a 20-14 win over Minnewaska Area.  The Wolves scored 1st on a 9 yard run by Sophomore, Sam Johnson.  The Wolves failed to score on the extra point try but had an early 6-0 lead.  Hass then connected with Myles Swenson on an 84 yd pass to put the Wolves up by 12.  Sam Johnson added the 2 pt conversion to give Milaca a 14-0 lead.  Senior, runningback, Steve Soper added 6 points to Milaca’s total with a 40 yd touchdown run!

Milaca had 4 running backs carry the ball 8 times or more:

Ryan Harper 12 carries 53 yds
Alex Hass 9 carries 33 yds
Jerad Sikkink 8 carries 27 yds
Sam Johnson 8 carries 27 yds

Steve Soper, another of Milaca’s runningbacks broke loose for a 40 yd touchdown run and piled up 88 yds on 4 carries.  The Wolves rushed for 233 yds behind the blocking of: Keean Rustad, Sr. OT, Stephen Girard, Sr. OG, Gibson Holewa, Sr. C, Greg Wright, Sr. OG, Marshal Ash, Jr. OT.

Receiving stats for Milaca:
Myles Swenson 5 for 132 yds 1 td
Jerad Sikkink 2 for 47 yds
James Bunger 1 for 11 yds
Jordan Patnode 1 for 6 yds

Passing:
Alex Hass 9-14 1 touchdown

On the defensive side of the ball, Milaca had great play from junior, Ripp Baker at DE.  Linebackers, Greg Wright, Ryan Harper, Jerad Sikkink, Gibson Holewa, Sam Johnson and Elliot Hass all turned in excellent first game performances.  Myles Swenson had Milaca’s 1 interception.

The Lakers gave the Wolves all they wanted in first game excitement.  It was a good challenge for our offensive line to see an attacking, blitzing defense and to have success against a defense like that early in the season.  Things do not get any easier, however, as Cathedral will bring a similar type of defense to Claffy Field next Friday night, Setpember 5th at 7 pm.  Cathedral lost a close 12-6 game to Montevideo to open their season.
