Wolves Season Ends at Albany

The Milaca Wolves Football season came to an end Saturday night, in Albany, as the #2 state - ranked, Huskies outscored the Wolves 42-16. The semi-final game of the 6AAA Section was played in the mud as the Wolves offense was slipping and sliding without much success. After a short drive by the Wolves, the Huskies used most of the first quarter on a grindout drive that resulted in a touchdown with 3 minutes left in the quarter. The second quarter was the disaster for the Wolves as Albany scored 3 quick touchdowns, one after a costly fumble on the Milaca 20 yard line, a missed pass coverage resulting in a pass to the 5 yard line, and another on a broken play just before half-time.

Milaca’s first score came on a fumble recovered in the Albany endzone by junior, defensive end, Ripp Baker. After a big hit by Baker, the ball popped loose and Ripp fell on it for the Milaca touchdown. Alex Hass ran the ball on a QB keep for the 2 point conversion. Milaca’s other score came on a 52 yard pass from Hass to WR, senior, Jordan Patnode. Jordan broke a tackle and ran the ball into the endzone for the Milaca score. Hass then threw to Myles Swenson for the 2 point conversion.

The slippery field, some costly penalties and defensive miscues all played a part in the loss. Albany now goes on to play New London - Spicer in the 6AAA Section Final to be played at SCSU, on October 31st, at 5:30 pm. NLS defeated Foley 31-10 in the section semi-final.

In the first round of the Section 6 AAA, the Wolves defense came to play as they held the Lakers of Minnewaska to 7 points and 176 yards of total offense. Senior, Quarterback, Alex Hass and Senior, Wide Receiver, Myles Swenson added the offensive fire power, as the two combined to score 28 points for the Wolves. Milaca opened the scoring with a 15 yard run by Alex following a 55 yard pass to Myles to move the Wolves into scoring position early in the first quarter. Milaca failed to convert the extra point but took an early lead 6-0. The Lakers countered with a 8 yard passing play to take their only lead of the night at 7-6.

Alex would score again before half time on a 11 yard run followed by a pass to Swenson for the 2 point conversion. In the third quarter, behind the blocking of Girard and Rustad, Hass would score on a 5 yard run.

After Milaca’s defense pinned Minnewaska deep in their own territory, Myles Swenson returned a 40 yard Laker punt for a touchdown, followed by a run by Hass for the 2 point conversion.

Defensively, Milaca had outstanding play by inside linebackers, Senior, Greg Wright, Senior, Ryan Harper, and Juniors, Elliot Hass and Sam Johnson. Outside linebackers, Senior, Jerad Sikkink and Senior, Gibson Holewa were there to take away the outside running game from the Lakers. Milaca’ s secondary of Bunger, Larson and Soper did a great job of keeping Minnewaska’s passing game in check. Myles Swenson added an interception to end a key Laker drive late in the game.

Milaca will now move on to take on Albany in the Section 6 AAA semi-final game on Saturday, at 7 pm in Albany. Other section results: Foley over Staples Motley, Albany 28-6 over Sauk Centre, New London - Spicer over Cathedral 49-21. Foley will travel to NLS in the other semi-final game on Saturday. The winners of these games will play for the Section championship at SCSU field on Friday, October 31st at 5:30 pm

It was non-stop excitement at Claffy Field as the #2 ranked Albany Huskies and the Milaca Wolves put on a thriller of a football game. Each team scored 6 touchdowns, but the Wolves failed to convert the extra points needed to keep pace with the Huskies. The Wolves jumped out to an early 6-0 lead on a pass from Hass to Swenson covering 25 yds. The try for extra point failed, but Milaca was on the board first. Albany countered with a 30 yd pass that brought them inside the 10 and they latered scored on a 1 yd run and added a 2 pt. conversion to lead 8-6. Albany then scored on a 41 yard pass to go up 14-6.

Sophomore, Sam Johnson brought the Wolves back into the game with a 14 yd run for a TD, but again the Wolves failed on the extra point try leaving the score 14-12. On the ensuing kickoff, Albany ends Milaca’s threat with a 75 yard kick return to go up 20-12 and then puts the Wolves down 27-12 at halftime with a 9 yd pass play.

The second half was a different ball game with Milaca outscoring the Huskies 26-13. Albany scored quickly on a long pass that brought them again inside the 10 yd line. The Wolves would not give up, they came back with a passion to win with Alex Hass scoring early in the 3rd quarter on a 32 yd run and he added the 2 points on a 3 yd run to bring the Wolves back to a 34-20 score. Hass then finds Swenson on a 20 yd pass to bring the score to 34-26 and the fans have something to cheer about. Sam Johnson then brings the crowd to their feet behind some great blocking by Rustad, Girard and Patnode to score on a 32 yard run around the left side. Another score by Sam on a 1 yard run puts Milaca ahead 38-34 ! But with just over 2 minutes left, Albany moves into scoring position on a sideline pass that left many wondering if the catch had really been made. It put Albany in scoring position and they take the lead on a 3 yd run to go up 40-38.

The fans that saw this ball game will not soon forget the excitement of the 2nd half comeback by the Milaca team. The energy coming from the stands gave the Milaca team the push to compete against one of the best football teams in central Minnesota.

JV teams Defeat Pierz and Melrose

      <dc:subject></dc:subject>

It was a great NBT game last night for the JV players that went to Pierz. The Wolves dominated the Pioneers 36-20. Cody Goor scored twice on pass receptions. One from Travis Hanenburg and one from Marcus Hanenburg. Cody also added a punt return for a TD. The punt return team set up a beautiful wall to the left side, fortunately, Cody ran to the right and scored anyway without any blocking. Marcus Hanenburg added his own touchdown with great blocks by Brent Gerrard and Tyler Girard. Riley Hoskins added the other touchdown finally completing Coach Mikla’s favorite play: Waggle Right, Fullback Screen Left. Great Blocking on the play by Marshall Hopp and Jim Peterson. Players of the game: Trench: Clinton Sampson; Gamebreaker: Cody Goor; Hits of the Week: Mitch Ruis and Joe Hemmerich’s foot (on the ball).

While the bulk of the JV Football team traveled to Pierz last night a few stayed at home and, with the help of the 9th grade squad, defeated the Melrose Junior varsity 34-30.

Key Performances:
Trench Player - Dylan Moorlag - Stud Defensive End and Offensive Tackle
Game Breaker - Brandon Kiel - Three Touchdowns
