Wolves Celebrate Homecoming with 35-13 win over Melrose
Sat, September 26, 2009 - Posted by Coach Johnson
The Wolves came to play for their Homecoming game as they defeated the Dutchmen of Melrose by a score of 35-13. After a slow start in the first quarter, Milaca’s offense started to click with both an effective running and passing game. Sam Johnson was escorted into the end zone 4 times behind the great blocking of senior linemen: Marshal Ash, Clinton Sampson, Jim Peterson, Ripp Baker, Marshall Hopp and Junior Travis Bertram. The offense picked up 226 yards on the ground and added another 133 yards in the air with the arms of both Hanenburg and Kiel adding to the passing totals. Kiel, Norrgard and Sikkink each had important catches to keep drives moving and Kiel hauled in a 23 yard Hannenburg pass for a Milaca touchdown.
The 2009 Homecoming game looked like it would be a washout with downpours of rain right up to game time, but the rain never returned after the start of the game and made for a great night of high school football to celebrate Milaca’s Homecoming. The Wolves put together a complete game with outstanding performances in every aspect of the game. Defensively, Ripp Baker, Mitch Ruis, Travis Bertram lead the team in tackles with Ruis recovering a fumble and Brandon Kiel picking off a pass in the end zone to stop a Melrose drive early in the first half. Milaca’s special teams also made an impact as Eduardo Sales goes 5 for 5 on extra points and continues to put the ball close to the end zone on kickoffs. But much of this week’s success rests on the shoulders of the offense and especially the offensive line. The Wolves offense was able to have success inside, outside and in the air. JT Johnson, Tyler Norrgard and Mitch Ruis balanced out the running attack and did a great job blocking to help move the ball in critical situations.
The momentum of the game moved to the Milaca side late in the second quarter as the Wolves were able to mount a drive with their 2 minute offense to go in to the locker room with a 14-7 lead. The Wolves took control of the second half with two quick scores finishing with the 35-13 win.

The Falcon defense was more than the Wolves could overcome as the Falcons scored a 16-3 win over the Wolves at SCSU on Friday, Sept. 18th. Both defenses played an outstanding game as the 1st quarter ended 0-0. Foley scored in the 2nd quarter to go up 8-0. The extra point by Foley failed as Marshal Ash and Ripp Baker knocked down the extra point kick, to leave the score 14-3. Milaca chose to take a safety after a Foley punt put the Wolves on the 1 yd line to leave the final 16-3.

Wolves Fall to the Crusaders 15-14

It was a typical Milaca - Cathedral game as the Crusaders came from behind in the last minute of the game to defeat the Wolves 15-14. The Wolves scored first on a 12 yd pass from Travis Hanenburg to Elliot Hass followed by the PAT by Eduardo Sales to put the Wolves up 7-0. Cathedral countered with a score as Spaniol, the Cathedral QB ran for a 26 yd TD. In the second half Hanenburg found Brandon Kiel for a 28 yd touchdown pass to put the Wolves up 14-7 after the Sales kick. Milaca had several opportunities to score in the fourth quarter but could not get the ball into the endzone. Midway through the fourth quarter, Defensive end, Marshal Ash intercepted a Cathedral pass and had the ball inside the 10 yd line but again failed to score. The Crusaders got the ball back on the Milaca 30 yard line with a little over 2 minutes left to play and worked their way down inside the 5 with 33 seconds left on the clock. Spaniol found an open receiver in the endzone to make the score 14-13. Cathedral decided to go for the win and completed another pass for the extra point to pull ahead 15-14 with 22 seconds left. Milaca made the finish exciting as they drove to the Cathedral 32 yard line on two completed passes, one to Marcus Hanenburg and one to Tyler Norrgard to give the Wolves a shot at a possible game winning field goal. The field goal attempt by Sales was just a little short to the left and the Crusaders left the field with a 15-14 win.
